Nintendo's reiterations of the 3DS have had me waiting to see how it'd all shake out. It looks like they're about done with new versions of 3DS. It's come down to the New 2DS XL and New 3DS XL for me.
At this point, I primarily would like a 3DS as a portable retro gaming machine for your Castlevanias, Zeldas, Mega Mans, etc. That said, after waiting so long, I feel like it'd be a waste not to experience the 3D gimmick, as it looked pretty good in-store on certain games like Majora's Mask 3D. (It's looking like the New 3DS XL is gradually being replaced by the 2D one, so I don't think there will be another New 3DS XL, but who can say?) Anyways, in terms of screen quality, weight, features, comfortability, what's my best option do you think? Just looking for opinions from users. I know there's something about Nintendo using different screen types (TN or IPS) from different manufacturers, but it doesn't sound like there are any solutions to getting the better type of the two. Is the lesser one that much worse in practical usage? I don't know if I'll act on this soon, as one never knows what Nintendo's cooking up, but any help is appreciated.

This link might help you as far as the technical stuff goes, but personally you can't go wrong with either one as both play DS games, both can play downloadable classic games (Gameboy, Gameboy Color, Game Gear, NES, & SNES) and both require a micro SD card if you plan on downloading games to the system. Now as far as game suggestions go you can't go wrong with Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, LoZ: A Link Between Worlds (if you love A Link to the Past then you'll probably love this one as well), Corpse Party (Horror Visual Novel), both Luigi's Mansion games (they recently released an upgraded port of the Gamecube original after the success of the sequel Dark Moon a few years ago), Bravely Default (turn based JRPG with a little twist), Pushmo/Stretchmo (downloadable 3D puzzle game), Metroid: Samus Returns (remake of the gameboy game Metroid 2), New Super Mario Bros 2, Super Mario Maker, Kirby Robo Planet, Yoshi's Woolly World, NES Remix, Azure Striker Gunvolt: Striker Pack 2D, the 3D versions of classic Sega Genesis games such as Streets of Rage 2 & Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (if you end up going the new 3DS XL route), and Xenoblade Chronicles X.

Well I'm a dude with very large hands, so a 3DS XL is the best for m. Plus, bigger screen = easier on the eyes to focus and whatever.
However, if you're looking for actual portability? Stick to the normal-sized DSes. They might actually fit in your pocket!
Also, maybe its just me, but I really didn't like the first iteration of the 2DS. Too big to be a portable, although I've heard its not bad once you get used to it.

Well, I've had a DS Lite, 3DS and now a New 3DS XL, and I prefer the latter out of the 3. They each had their merits, though.

Out of the blue, a buddy of mine gave me his used 3DS XL, and it's pretty awesome. Now I'm just left wondering how the New 3DS XL is in comparison, regarding how it holds the 3D at different angles or not. The lack of an SNES eshop option on the older model is kinda disappointing, too.

I have the original model, pretty sure at least some snes games are available.

I wanna see better titles on these handhelds before I decide to upgrade from my old 3DS. Needs more action/adventure games instead of the usual brain-training, mario sports and pokemon crap

It seems to depend on the game, but I find the New 3DS XL kind of more comfortable. Some games seem a teeny bit stretched, but some of the later games were clearly made with New 3DS's performance in mind. 3D Mode stills works great though.
I used to have a red chrome one (very shiny), but I got the SNES one when it went on sale not too long ago. I gave the red one to my cousin because I wanted him to have one.
Edit: I used to have the original model, but I gave that to same said cousin. When I was transferring data to the New 3DS XL, model, I was shocked a the screen size. Had great times with it, but woah.

I have a New 3DS XL and its too small for my hands. It hurts after 20 minutes of gameplay. If XL means it have larger buttons, I do not see how other versions would fit better in my palm.
When I use game with the pen, its the best thing ever, its just so.. Small! I also tried Switch yesterday at my cousins house for 10 minutes, and those joypad thingies you attach on the side had the same feel, - small.

For me, 3DS XL is best. Its screen is bigger and easy to focus.
