Ben Judd will be joining us October 20th or 21st on the Bloodstained Community Broadcast. Every October Ben has given us his time to share his unique perspective on the industry. Ben is IGA's agent at DDM and is co-founder of Dangen, his publishing company. Ben has been instrumental in making Bloodstained happen and propelling IGA's opportunities beyond what Konami would allow. I encourage you to listen to his older episodes as we wait for the later bit of October to roll around. Oct 2015Oct 2016Oct 2017I asked Ben if he had any questions for the community, so I will be gathering your responses for him. He wants to know; Your favorite Indie Metroidvanias, how you feel about new remakes and HD titles coming out recently, and if youcould remake one non-Nintendo or SQ-EX game from PS2 or earlier, what would it be?

My question is: What did you learn from the various stages of development, and most recently the beta? What feedback has been taken on board? As for answers to those questions: Fav indie metroidvania is a tough one, I like a lot of them. HD titles and remakes can be good, but only if there is legitimate effort put into them, and preferably at a decent price point. I would remake the Sonic Adventure games. Full remake, both games, mechanics updated to work better in the current day then they did back in the day. Throw in a bunch of new stuff, stuff that was meant to go in but ran out of time ETC, but keep the more goofy but more serious bits.
I will also ask you those three questions.

My answers:
1) Rabi-Ribi is my fav indie Metroidvania 2) I'm fine with it as long they stay reasonbly priced 3) Breath of Fire 3 (It belongs to Capcom btw). I'd usually say Grandia 1 but that is already being done.

Favorite Metroidvania: Symphony, hands down. Not only was the game itself visually gorgeous, but the gameplay was smooth as silk, and it was the game that finally fleshed out the story and got me hooked back into Castlevania. Despite having only a single mention on the game’s booklet, and no actual part on the game itself, Lisa became an inspiration for me.
Honestly, am bitterly disappointed about the remakes for a number of reasons. First and foremost because of their decision to make them PS4 exclusive. I’d rather play Symphony and other CV titles on my Switch to be honest. CV got started on Nintendo, I feel like Konami has forgotten that. Secondly their decision to make the release digital only. Physical copies are necessary for collectors like me. Lastly because to me, it seems like Konami’s attempt to one-up Iga and it’s just plain petty at this point. They either need to stick to their pathetic pachislots, let the IP Rest In Peace, or actually let it go. Though I don’t see any of those happening; wishful thinking at this point.
Hmm... Non-Nintendo or Squeenix? Toughie. I’ll have to think on it and edit later.

1) Hollow knight, even though I just started playing when it came out and never continued, i plan to do it soon, I like what I have seen until now. 2) I welcome remakes or HD versions of old very good games, but only if done right(Silent Hill 2 and 3 remakes were awful) 3) Silent Hill 1, Captain Claw

I'm really enjoying Bunny Must Die!
Please... tell us the reasoning behind scrapping the vita version just a few months after stating that it's still on schedule. As is widely known, Sony will continue to support the system with physical releases in Japan throughout 2019 and beyond, and as it's region free, why do the cut off?

1. Ori and the Blind Forest, Guacamelee, & Sundered 2. I'm fine with remakes & re-masters in general as long as they aren't for games/series that came out less than 10 years ago (or one console generation ago) 3. That's a toughie cause there are a few non Square/Nintendo games I'd definitely like to see get remade such as Cold Fear, Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare, Timesplitters, Dragon Spirit, and The Thing .....hmm I think I'm gonna go with Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare especially if they do it in the same vein as the RE 2 remake.

1) Dead Cells 2) I enjoy seeing games re-made in HD as long as enough care/detail is put into the remake. 3) Can we go arcade with this? I'd like to see Magic Sword remade as a single player adventure in 3D (not 2d side scrolling). It would be great to explore the tower, find secrets and hidden comrades, and take down enemies with some good 3d melee combat mechanics.
Oh, and question for Ben Judd: "How do you feel about Bloodstained's development? The delay to 2019? Do you still feel as excited and confident for the game post-Beta-Backer-demo?"

Your favorite Indie Metroidvanias: Does Faxanadu count? I'm saying Faxanadu. How you feel about new remakes and HD titles coming out recently: I don't like buying the same game multiple times. That being said, if the game is over 15 years old I would like some of my games on a current system instead of trying to hook up an old system to a new TV. If you could remake one non-Nintendo or SQ-EX game from PS2 or earlier, what would it be?: Summoner for the PS2. One of the best, underrated games I have ever played.

1. Hollow Knight's definitely up there.
2. I love remakes and HD remasters, if only because it gives people more opportunities to try a great game they might've missed the first time around. For example, I've never played Katamari Damacy, so I really want to pick up Reroll and see what it's like.
3. Hm... I don't plan to buy a VR device, but based on what I've seen of Jumping Flash!, a VR remake of that game would be an incredible, terrifying experience.

1) Hard to say between Axiom Verge which I'm loving & Ori and the Blind Forest which I'm playing currently. Both games are so stylish in their own ways.
2) I feel pretty good about HD remakes and re-releases, they bring a revamped experience to a new audience but I also feel they are a bit lazy. Zelda Twilight Princess HD could've been so much more.
3) That's kind of a hard question, I'm a pretty die hard Nintendo gamer so a ton of games I love are Nintendo. I'd have to say I'd love an HD remake of the game InFamous. That game was just so fun for me. Seeing it updated to modern hardware and across multiple platforms would be so sweet.

I'm seeing questions that ask Ben things as if he were on the development team or part of the decision making team. He can give opinions or info from his perspective, just keep in mind he won't be able to answer some stuff due to not having a role in the development process. Just keep that in mind when you ask your questions. It doesn't mean I won't bring up what your asking, I just might approach the subject differently than you might expect.

Your favorite Indie Metroidvanias.Super Panda Adventures, looks bad, played okey, but I finished it. More than I can say about many other games. How you feel about new remakes and HD titles coming out recentlyGood for those that didn't get to play the originals. To me personally, I think its lazy. Fans need continuations, and if thats not possible, a HD is okey, I guess. Remakes sounds more interesting though. If you could remake one non-Nintendo or SQ-EX game from PS2 or earlier, what would it be?Devil Dice, on Playstation One. The game is a million-seller and a demo version was released as a PlayStation Classic game for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable (PSP) on November 7, 2007. A sequel, Xi Jumbo was released on the original PlayStation in Japan and Asia. The "Jumbo Mode" gameplay changes were integrated into Bombastic on the PS2.Questions
- We got Mac & Cheese in Bloodstained. Did you know?
- Do you guys have plans to release, or try to release anything on PS Vita this year?
- Are your voice, maybe, in Bloodstained somewhere? Perhaps a scream?

Your favorite Indie Metroidvanias.I haven't really played the flood of indie Metroidvanias, but I really enjoyed the new 2014 Strider by Double Helix Games and Capcom's Osaka studio. (If it had had more diverse locales like the NES game, it would have been just about perfect.) But to be honest, the Metroidvania formula has really worn thin for me in recent years, which is why I haven't sought out the indie games (outside of Bloodstained, of course). Super Metroid and Symphony of the Night set the bar pretty high, and the first Metroid Prime did a good job with it as well. By the time Dawn of Sorrow came around, I was pretty burned out on the genre overall. Symphony of the Night and Circle of the Moon are probably my favorite Castlevania Metroidvanias. (On second thought, for indie Metroidvanias, I have to say that Castlevania: The Lecarde Chronicles 2 by Migami Games looks pretty amazing in how it flexes the formula a bit with more platforming, puzzles, and variety of indoor and outdoor areas.) How you feel about new remakes and HD titles coming out recentlyFor one, I think they are coming too fast now. Shadow of the Colossus basically just negated its PS3 remaster with its PS4 remake. I would prefer new content, by and large. I do think that Resident Evil 2 is handling things well, but altogether, I've realized that if you're going to spend so much time on a remake, it'd be better to do a sequel, because the joy of these remakes can never match the original experience, since the player has already been spoiled. It's sort of an exercise in futility. So in general, I'm against remakes and HD remasters. Instead, developers should try to take what was great about a game and infuse and evolve that in a sequel or new IP.
If you could remake one non-Nintendo or SQ-EX game from PS2 or earlier, what would it be?It took me a minute, but then I realized it should be Castlevania 64 (otherwise just known as Castlevania for the Nintendo 64). It was the only 3D Castlevania to fully capture the action-platforming roots of the series while also having a good mix of exploration and atmosphere, but it had a troubled development history. Here's a case where a remake makes a lot of sense: First, add in all of the material cut from the final build of game like whip-swinging over gaps ala Super Castlevania IV, a Frankenstein character's quest, special moves, additional NPC/survival-horror mechanics related to the night-and-day cycle, decision-driven forks in the castle route, and more, including stuff reworked into the Legacy of Darkness pseudo-sequel/prequel. And on top of that, refine the camera, graphics, and some of the rougher design elements, while not turning it into a combo-fest like God of War or Devil May Cry, and not losing the game's gritty haunted atmosphere. This could end up being the perfect 3D Castlevania experience. But it has to keep the core gameplay vision of the original, which doesn't divorce action from platforming like so many modern 3D games, and all other post-N64 3D Castlevanias, have.
Questions for Ben:
1.) What does he think of the new PS4's Spider-Man swinging mechanics compared to his work on Bionic Commando (2009)?
2.) From your time at Capcom, do you know why the Maximo game series was made instead of pursuing a full-3D Ghosts 'N Goblins series?
3.) What did Ben think of Curse of the Moon? (especially compared to something like Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse).
4.) Is this what you expected the development timeline for Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night might be, given the scope of the project? Did you foresee having to move things away from Inti-Creates?
P.S. Ben, I'm still waiting on a new full-3D Bionic Commando 2. (You can still pull some strings, right?) Have it be more mission-based, dropping Nathan from a helicopter or VTOL into diverse areas with that rewarding 3D grappling mechanic GRIN developed, with a few more diverse kind of objectives, and I'm a very happy gamer. ^_^

Q1: " Your favorite Indie Metroidvanias?" Answer: Without a doubt; * Ori and the Blind Forest and * Shantae: Half-Genie Hero. Cave Story and Salt & Sanctuary are also great. Q2: " How do you feel about recent remakes and HD titles?" Answer: So far, the only recent remakes/HD remasters I've played & enjoyed are DuckTales: Remastered, The Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess HD, Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster, & Radiant Historia: Perfect Chronology. The changes made to all four were perfectly alright with me, especially for the last [and most recent] one. ^ In fact, I'd even recommend that Ben Judd check out Radiant Historia: Perfect Chronology if he hasn't already, especially if he didn't play the original game for DS. Just in-case, I'll include this link to a video review of the game for him to view if he wants to before playing it. Q3: " And if you could remake one non-Nintendo or SQ-EX game from PS2 or earlier, what would it be?" Answer: If I had the talent to program games, I'd choose to remake the PS2 game Eternal Poison. A hidden gem of an RPG game, in my opinion, which allows you to play through the story from the perspective of five different characters.

id say its a tie between axiom verge and shantae, i like the difficulty of axiom but shantae is super cute and funny. faxanadu doesnt get enough love though
remakes are great, fukonami pulled a fukonami only announcing it on ps4 but then its fukonami, so what else should i expect from them, im still hoping for a saints row 1 and 2 remake in the sr3 engine >.>, my biggest issues though with the remakes and ports is often we get shafted on the switch versions cause crapcom likes to release half of a collection as digital or theyll digital it and release the physical like 6 months after i buy it
my one remake would actually have to be a series, and itd be ultima 1-5 in the ultima 6 engine, itd be primarily a graphical upgrade to bring the series to a new generation who currently has to fight dosbox to play the early games at not 1000000fps when the nes ultima 3 has some pretty catchy music in it, but surprise surprise ultima is owned by dEAd studio so irony abounds

Thank you for your time, Ben, I know you're a very busy man and we appreciate it.
My question for Ben would be: During the dawn of the HD generation Japanese companies were struggling to find their footing with few successes and many failures. But now the picture is very different with multiple recent worldwide triumphs like Monster Hunter World, Nier Automata, Nioh, Persona 5, Octopath Traveler, Dragonball FighterZ, Nintendo in general, and Dragon Quest XI marking the return of the series to home consoles and even embracing the PC! What changed from the PS3 to the PS4 generation that influenced this positive change? Do you think we're seeing a Japanese game industry renaissance?
My answers to Ben's questions:
1) Favorite Indie Metroidvania Guacamelee. I'm Mexican so my opinion is super biased. That game was a love letter to Mexico and I loved every second of it.
2) How I feel about new remakes and HD titles coming out recently, Very excited and I'm a sucker for them. I am, however, let down by the Castlevania Requiem release since it only contains two Castlevanias and are two of the most readily available games in the series. Where's CV Bloodlines available other than a Genesis cartridge? They need to put some effort on these HD Collections for them to matter
3) If you could remake one non-Nintendo or SQ-EX game from PS2 or earlier, what would it be? Konami's Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon for N64. It was basically Zelda Ocarina of Time cross Japanese humor and folklore a year and a half before Zelda on N64 came out. Its an incredibly underrated game and my pick for the absolute best non-Nintendo non-Rare game on the console.

To Ben: how involved are you with IGA at this point? Do you still work together?
Ben's questions: 1. I'd say it's Ori and the Blind Forest. It sure has a lot going for it - super fluent gameplay, a dazzlingly beautiful world and a fantastic soundtrack. However, I'll have to give a special shoutout to The Lecarde Chronicles 2 as it's simply the best fangame I ever played and I had a great time with it.
2. I don't really know, to be honest I haven't played any recent remakes... I must say that there's a lot of potential in remaking very old classics and not only updating the visuals and audio but also modernising some of their UX design to make them more accessible to current audiences.
3. I'd go with Castlevania: Curse of Darkness. It was a super fun game with some significant problems (level design being the worst offender here). If the issues it had could be adressed alongside graphical improvements, it would surely be one of the best Castlevania titles ever made. I replayed it recently and definitely had a great deal of fun with it again.

Your favorite Indie Metroidvanias:
Dark Souls Axiom Verge, Ori and the Blind, Dead Cells, Hollowed Knight, Salt and Sanctuary. Honorable mention: 'Dust: An Elysian Tale' had a fairly good story I enjoyed, however the exploration and combat was very mind numbing
How you feel about new remakes and HD titles coming out recently: Both are fine, however, lately I'm finding that HD-Remasters are more or less becoming cash grabs for companies given the price they usually advertise them at (i.e., Dark Souls 1 remaster)
I feel Final Fantasy X/X-2 did a great/reasonable job with their HD-Remaster. They upscaled most graphics, increased geometry in some assets/resources, included additional content only available in the international release
I feel Shadow of the Colossus was a fantastic example of a remake staying true to the original.
FFVII Remake is certainly an example, however, I'm displeased with direction they are going, however, it's certainly a pre-mature judgement. I just feel it's a very risky decision to do as they are. I would have preferred a more HD-remake of the original content/concept/mechanics/gameplay, EVEN IF not the BEST of quality as the common AAA titles may have us expect/want. (but with my vision, it may then only appeal to the hardcore final fantasy fanbase.)
If you could remake one non-Nintendo or SQ-EX game from PS2 or earlier, what would it be?
Xenogears I'm giving two three as my first one just came to me, however, it could be because I'm on this forum and in the mood:
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (PS1) STILL 2D sprites, although I understand that with more pixels it can be harder to depict consistency between sprite work and varying artists on the team. But, this is what I'd want. AND have MORE music in the damn inverted castle. Keep the the crappy voice recording quality; for some reason, to me this added value to Alucard's voice. I'd personally even settle for same original resolution or perhaps just a little larger (widescreen obviously)
Or hell.... remake it like a dark souls games. Dark Souls is, to me, the true 3D castlevania game. Albeit, I don't think the battle mechanics of dark souls would really fit the Castlevania vibe. Soooo that'd be a challenge for sure.
Seriously Xenogears... Metal Gear 1 and 2 (MSX) They could make for a new incredible Metal Gear Game on modern hardware, however, I think we understand this is very unlikely to happen. #konami Also David Hayter's voice is sooo sexy.
Alundra 1 and 2 (PS1)

Indie metroidvania: I get the feeling that these are sprawling due to a toxic conjuncture of developers getting too lazy to actually design a tight action experience, and gamers getting too distant from the years this genre was conceived. I'm sad to report that very few, commercial or indie, have been a worthy experience in the recent years.
HD remakes: these too are quite too often a disappointment. They almost never match the original: Superfrog, Ducktales, Castle of Illusions, are all better played on Amiga, NES and Genesis. The kind of HD treatment that works is what M2 does, keeping the original sprite assets and trying to emulate it the best possible way on modern hardware.
Remake a non-nintendo game...? Odd question, but I'd love to see someone trying an attempt at redoing Silent Bomber.
