Your edit feels very forced to me.
The fact that the element you are talking about is symmetrical... when you glance to the other side of logo there is the same element on that side as well.
If it were like you suggested it breaks the harmony of the elements as it would appear that only that 'feather' is missing now.

At the same time I always feel that when someone says "no pun intended" they definitely want to point out that the pun is there and did in fact intend it.
