nephy Oh, that was your portrait! Really cool, like I said it looks great! Mana did a great job and your idea was really nice But in reference to the other portaits, yeah, the team would have to go along with what folks requested. But Mana's art is good enough I'd be happy with any arrangement of portraits, so I suppose its all good

The female rose-eye portrait is beautiful, perfectly fitting in with the game. I dislike the ones in your pic because of the silly expressions, but if that's what the backers wanted, there's nothing to be done. Ah, well... The girl with the rose eyepatch is actually my backer portrait. I was pleasantly surprised when I was playing the demo when I came across it, especially so early. It made me really giddy with joy. I knew that the portraits would show up in the castle entrance but didn't think they would be in the demo. I never got the impression that it would break the immersion. However I feel like the portraits should be placed a little differently. Having two portraits on one wall makes it look a little crammed in there. Perhaps making them on one wall with pillars on the side to look more like a gallery presentation might have been better so in between portraits you see the background a little bit. I had no problem with the portrait next to mine, and I loved the cat...but you have to think about maybe what was requested. When the Kickstarter began, people who bought the Ancestral Bloodline Tier were under the impression that there was going to be a different artstyle involved. So perhaps the people that put in the descriptions for the Portraits may have had a different theme in mind. Honestly we do not know if they just posted a picture of themselves and stated "I want to look like Dracula" or "I want to look like a monk". I know that when I received my Portrait art I was actually quite surprised with how high the quality was. Woah hey, yeah I mention yours in the first post as well, it's the one I meant as seeming like an original piece by Mana since to me it looks like her art style for her own things. Maybe you two were just a great fit. Wonderful portrait, congratulations. Good points too, you're right, it's very likely this is exactly what those folks requested to their own specifications, perhaps not knowing what the theme/overarching feel and atmosphere of the game would be. So far so good overall anyway. Thank you so much for stopping in!

Oh another thing nephy , about being surprised about the quality, my thoughts when I found out this artist would be doing them was Wish I had known back then Mana would be doing them. This is unfair over-delivering lol I knew a while before May '18 but yeah, I would have scraped together and got one in, most likely! She joined the project a bit after the KS though, and not lending artistic talent until a good while after that. Thankfully we pushed and succeeded to have her do more for us. I'm not the type to say "I can't believe this is even a discussion", but I can't believe this is even a discussion. They paid quite a hefty price for it, and what happens to each and every one of them should lie in the decisions of those who paid that price.
I talk about how backer content shouldn't be made available to non-backers, but I feel much more strongly about these portraits than anything else, or any other of the tiered in game rewards.

That hardly seems fair for the people who spent the money to essentially be in the game. The people who backed the project knew the pictures were going to be in it. It wasn't hidden to anyone.

It would be far more "look at me!", I'd say, if the portraits were in something like the library or an art themed stage that we would have to make multiple backtrack trips through. There is nothing more iconic and "look at me" than the front entrance of the castle. A fitting environment for them is far more subtle regardless if you agree or not. Okay, I understand your point. And those "other" forums are a large part of the reason I made this here. A topic was made somewhere else where I'm an admin with this text (1 of 2 they had started about it): "If you dislike the portraits (as much as I or more) do not forget to upload your opinion about that on the official forums (I know most of you already know that)" No one had done this. I'm a bit of a broken record telling people that putting up their feedback, whatever it might be, doesn't amount to much (or anything) outside of these official channels, and seeing as there's also a quite annoying perception that we're a positivity echo chamber here, they avoid/won't speak out anyway. Seeing that, I said I'd start this myself since none were willing, and personally preside over it to make sure the best I could that the backers of that tier, other backers/fans as well as Mana were all respected in the discussion. That sort of toggle mentioned should definitely be off the table, and I'm sure the team feels the same way. I've seen theplottwist suggest elsewhere that a change of palette may help the jarring-ness issue some have, if that were agreeable to the backers and development.

I understand their reasoning. They want to completely immerse themselves. However it was clear from the beginning that what was being advertised was not a totally immersive experience, and even with that said the portraits really don't detract from anything. You can imagine anything from them. Maybe they were alchemists, or Gebel's benefactors, or something else. Btw I really do think yours came out the best, and I really wouldn't want to see it go. When I first saw it I thought "that person must like Drakengard 3". I don't know if you do or not, never thought I'd have the chance to find out.

I think they're fairly well done since they fit the setting and don't detract from the immersion at all. That said the developers should be careful to not overuse the portraits. There was a stage in Mighty No. 9 with roughly the same ten people repeated over and over to the point where it was a challenge to count how many times each portrait appeared. Needless to say, that destroys immersion and cheapens the experience completely.

thrashinuva - I have played all the Drakenguard games but I did not draw inspiration from there. The character was created before Drakenguard 3 came out. The rose on her right eye is supposed to be an eyepatch and the original design of it was black with gold trimmings. Under the eyepatch she has a purple eye.

- With right lightning once its in the game for reals, the portrait will "pop" differently. But yeah, they need to be darker in tone.
- Portraits should be spread out in the castle, not so close to each other. It feels too clean for being a castle of hell. And one wall, one portrait.
- Put in a random factor. Make the portraits random, but have the equal % of them to "spawn".
- Do not have any portraits in secret rooms, unless its portraits of the developers, not backers. It would make everything like a "sport" if the random factor were in place and some spots wouldn't be as fun to end up on, as other spots during that gameplay. For example, everyone have surely their favorite area or room, and seeing his or hers picture in a secret room, locked away just doesn't get that positive vibe across. Developers however is a go. I am all for that.
- Credit list do not need to show these portraits again, if there is any plans for it. It would make the rest of the credit-names "less important". Have portraits in game.

I actually like the concept of showing the Portraits next to the backers names showing in the credits and was hoping that they would do that. Also as far as portraits in secret rooms, if they bought the tier for the portrait and the secret room, I see no reason why they cannot combine those since they paid the money for it. I recall a conversation way early in the kickstarter that a backer was pondering that idea.

I was really worried when I read the tier description on the kickstarter about the portraits sticking out too much and looking awkward, and my first trip through the hallways I did feel that they looked pretty bad, but I actually quickly got used to it and kinda enjoyed them being there. I think the idea of only having one per wall is probably a good idea. I was originally hoping there would be, basically, a "secret room" that included the portraits so you would only have to see them that one time you go into the secret room, but honestly I don't mind this as it is now.
Also, I think we can all agree that the cat is awesome.

Upon further review and playing, really the "Friar Tuck" and the "Count Dracula" are the ones that cause the most issue with me--mainly because they're hamming it up. They could be moved somewhere more discrete, where their bizarre nature might actually add to the atmosphere, like some surreal chamber. I noticed that there is one portrait by itself late in the demo in a side room, and that didn't bug me much. It actually made the room seem more unique. Agreed, though, that lighting could also help this whole situation out. But I totally respect the fact that the Backers of this tier SHOULD be featured; they paid for it. I just think there might be more effective ways to display them.

I saw yours a few times at the Cathedral, I noticed that the portraits there changes randomly everytime you leave the area.

Very reliable, you and the other two backer portraits kept me stocked up for my 100% item list. Some mats were easier to obtain via dismantling, rather than farming.
