was hoping with the sub weapons (shards) being mapped to their own buttons we would get a return of scv4s whip mechanics. 8 directions, with the dangly thing. alas, i dont think itll happen. thatd make whips too good. though i am less caring about balance in a game like this. there's gonna be a busted option no matter what that auto-wins most situations for you. it is the nature of the igavania. however, maybe lower the base attack or something might work. a melee weapon with good range, but less than stellar attack. maybe with modding or somesuch... also i feel like the hitbox is wonky. like, i feel like a hit looks like it connected, but it didnt.

Except for the sexy animation, whips are pretty awful as they stand, which is a shame, because whether you call it "Castlevania" or not, it's one of the signature marks of this franchise and one I was looking very forward to sharing with my wife so she can finally understand my love of whips (keep it PG, homies!).
Now sure, you're always going to have your fringe oddball claim that, "X is fine, it's simply that you have to use it under A, B, and C circumstances, when the stars align and fairydust snows down from the sky!" Okay, fine, but that's not really a winning argument. No weapon in game should be SO insanely circumstantial that you can't enjoy it 90% of the time. That guarantees it's relegated to a novelty, like many of the Diablo joke weapons, because it's outclassed in pretty much every meaningful way by a more standard, better-performing choice.
This makes me sad, because whips have so much style, and they are rarely featured successfully in games. NO, I don't want a clone of the Castlevania whips, because it would look absolutely silly in 2.5D. What I want is for the dev team to make a couple of minor tweaks to make this weapon competitive. Any combination of the following: better range, a useful "special" input, and (most importantly) faster speed would go a great way to actually using whips, as opposed to where they stand now, which is, "That looks cool, okay, back to using sword."

I'm mainly a sword guy (if you couldn't tell), but it's not like I don't like whips. I've played 3 igavania games with main characters that used whips; Harmony of Dissonance, Circle of the Moon, and Portrait of Ruin; and I loved those games. With that said, there are at least 2 issues with whips in the new demo: - The slow recovery animation
- The fact that flying enemies can be difficult to hit
Here's how to fix these issues:
- Cut the recovery animation by 50% or more
- Make a dedicated upward attack that is done by holding up while attacking
Just my 2 cents.

Whips are fine if you know how to use them. They cover a wide area in front of and below Miriam, sort of like the opposite of CotM Gebel. The recovery animations being long are punishment for missing.

I have a big problem with the whips right now. Yes, there is some realistic animation, but as they stand, they just aren't as satisfying or utilitarian as the sword weapons. Given that it was "Sword or Whip," and the vote was so close, these two should be closer in usefulness for those of us who'd rather use a whip throughout most of the game. Right now the hitbox and recovery time makes it too much of a detriment to use regularly, and switching between weapons is not exactly smooth in this type of game. Plus, the hitbox for breaking lanterns with it seems to have a blind spot if you jump just below them, which is annoying. If this stays the same, I'm going to have to stick to the blander swords, which a lot of game heros/heroines have, which is a shame. This doesn't have to be so focused on making Miriam play most effectively as an SotN Alucard-type, when the game clearly already has a lot of options.

And the hitbox is obviously not fine if we go by this post: Thought I should add one more thing which I just noticed while playing through the demo that ties into the whole hit box discussion (I decided to get a few screenshots of it occurring and will have them posted below ) which is that if certain enemies (like ghosts,bats,etc) are close to Miriam and within the whip's arc attack when she attacks they do not get hit by her whip which leaves her open to an attack that can essentially knock her out of her attack animation mid attack.

The thing is that the whip as it stands does "NOT" follow logic and her animation. Her hand motion shows that she should not have a big gap in her attack which it does. Right now the attack floats and is not part of her. The Gap is most of the problem a small speed boost and a sight longer reach at the base of the "C" should work without breaking the game. Here's an example of what I mean about the motion should hit the Amy Ghost's, Candles...etc.

The whips aren't like Castlevania due to reasons.
But I guess there could be greater hitbox registration from the whip at least if needed.

I enjoyed the whip, it covers a huge amount of space in front of Miriam, and even on her back, by the hitbox of a knife. Played the demo only with the whip, and it was a great feeling. Just hoped for a reduced recovery when hitting while standing, since it's not always the best idea to hop attack.

Whip is only good for ground based enemies. Hit box is too low. Move it up half Miriam's height and it would be perfect. You could then still duck attack to hit small ground enemies, and jump to hit flying enemies. Otherwise everything else is fine, in my opinion.

We could compromise with the damage out put of the inner circle and have it do less damage when targets are close to you like the Ghost. Sense in real life they are less damaging when their closer to the person. But it still needs to do damage inside of the "C". I like the downward attack and the speed needs a little tweaking but the "GAP" has to be fill with the arc of the whip even with less damage to be correct. Right now only the tip is counting and that is incorrect, Yes it is the most damaging part but it's not the only part that hurts with a whip. And if we get whips like cat-o-nine's are we going do the same and have gaps that should not be there. I think the Whip should have a fast spinning attack around the player that is faster to use and protect you 360 degrees but with less damage; which can be done in the air too while just holding down the attack button. Also have a forward , forward , attack combo that when whiped the target gets grab and the player hits back direction to pull it toward you or toward it and gets a super kick in the face.

I don’t know why people are bothering to argue what’s realistic. This is a game where you hunt demons. I don’t care if it’s the tip or not, the weapon should feel effective.
As it stands, people can enjoy the whip or not, but it is simply not up to the standard of other weapons. At the very least, they should remove the dead zone in the attack arc and increase the speed.

Ever since I tried the whip, my first thought was "will this have a special command input for combos?"
Aside the disappointment of its *insert everything everyone has said in this thread here*, I do feel it should do a 2-3 hit combo while standing to balance its drawbacks. The animation would be akin to Leon Belmont in LoI.

The fact is whips are a big part of Castlevania lore and this game is taking huge amounts of inspiration from past Castlevania games. I love the whips in ALL past 2D Castlevania games + Ritual of the Moon and wouldn’t change anything about them. Heck even the old school Castlevania 1 NES whip feels much better than this.......I hate the whip in Bloodstained. I trust that Iga will fix this and do whips justice in the final release of Bloodstained. Hell Iga made the whip in the 2.5D PSP release (psp castlevania dracula x chronicles) ten times better than the whip in Bloodstained. I’m very disappointed right now but I’m hoping Iga takes this feedback to heart.

I like the swing of the whip being unique to give it different uses than other weapons I like how the animation for the whip looks I like the sound effects for the whip but I can't see me using the whip much because of the very annoying scream Miriam makes when she uses it. I like all the other weapon screams she makes, but there's something about the whip scream I just can't stand also missing special combos like the katana and boots have, personally would like all weapon types to have two of. maybe one that attacks in both front and back for when you're surrounded and another that could disarm any enemy for a short period that uses a weapon, or maybe an interrupt.

Personally, I think if they used a 'hold to combo' type of attack for the whip it would be more interesting. moving the analog stick to change arc and/or direction could make it a very versatile weapon.

im fine with the whip having a sweet spot in its normal, i do think it needs a couple frames taken out to make it faster in line with how quick whips can move, maybe a special where miriam attacks in an arc upwards or spins the whip in tighter using her body, similar to these momentum tricks, especially the one near the end
