My final over all impression was that it is quite fun. Even though it is a beta, and bugs and some annoyances are to be expected, I would recommend it to friends.
Pluses:
Game play is smooth for the most part
The boot weapon is so smooth that I can see playing it exclusively. Movement is pretty good so far. I dont have any real complaints here since I can move as I want across the screen with no real issues.
The leveling feels pretty nice
Being able to play as I like is nice. When I first play a game like this, I want to be able to try everything out. This means grinding out lots of items and getting as much as I can. This has resulted in me being higher level then expected, but I am not level 20, just 13 when I took on Zangetsu. Add in the fact that grinding like that also is making my shards stronger and more flexible and it is being pretty fun.

Backgrounds
This is definitely a high point in the game. While it would be nice for some hallways to have more color to them, for the most part, I have been impressed with what I have seen.
Music
Another high point. I am hoping music later in the game reaches the level of music we got in SotN with vocals being introduced, but so far, I have no problem with listening to the game's music as I played.

Size
Everything I have seen implies the game is going to be huge. I hope this holds true. If it does, I am going to be quite happy.

Minuses:
Targeting isnt the best
This goes for both where an attack hits and for targeted shards. Most of the time, weapon attacks are just fine, but there have been a few times where I have seen them miss enemies right next to me. The targeted shards are even stranger. I do not understand why you have to use the right thumbstick. The left one should work just as well and allow you to use them on the move better than you can now.
Some weapons feel useless
The whip comes to mind as the worst offender. It doesnt do the greatest damage and its attack speed is so slow that you are in danger in places like the bat hallways if you dont move slowly. Pretty much all the 2-handers suffer from this, just not as badly.

Shards are inconsistent
This is both in how useful they are and also in how they scale. For me, the bat one is just indispensable. It goes through walls, runs forever, does high damage, is easy to farm, and when you level it, it get geometrically stronger. On the flip side for it though, taking it past rank 3 isnt worth it. The bats are so clustered that only 3 hits register. Now compare that to Cerulean Splash. Farming shards is a lot harder due to how the enemy spawns. The attack doesnt move nicely bounces off walls, and all leveling it does is make it do that more. The bee summon is even worse.

Appearance if Milliam is silly quite often
I lived in Japan and studied its culture. I understand the reasons for the cute/silly looks. That said, it isnt going to help sell it in the west. An appearance slot for each area is a simple solution.

Sound levels are inconsistent
There are sounds that are just randomly louder. This should be easy to fix. I know I have already reported one that happens in a specific case, and I just hope other people report other cases so they are so common.

Lighting
There are cases where we get to see some amazing lighting. The red moon room being one of them. Unfortunately, that is really rare. We have torches burning yellow, but the room is a bland stark white with no shadows. It would be so much nicer if we had more color with a few more shadows. I know there are shadows in the game. There is an outdoor area where you can see an Areal's shadow in the background even though it is high up in the air, just, it seems like there arent any most of the time.

Stats
I have no clue what most of them do. I can guess, but I am uncertain. I am hoping we get more information later, but as of right now, we just have none. Any chance we can get an email at least for the beta with some information that would be in a manual later?

Edit:
Travel Times
While I am certain something will be added later, even this early, it still feels really slow to get back to the base to craft stuff and upgrade stuff. Even if it is only a quick return, it would be nice to get someway to get back quicker. If there is nothing planned, a quick travel between save points would be really nice.

The biggest downside
The game is so fun right now, I just want to have the rest of it right now to play through all of it.
