There have been contests where two sides have engaged in a competition to create a superior product, with one of those sides being known for having said product as a large part of their culture, and the other side winning the contest. An example that comes to mind is Scotland losing "World's Best Whiskey", but they lost to Japan, so... I'm going to bet on Japan.  |

What? Are you guys seriously thinking Japan's habit of making anime and fantasy live action shows has any merit to an actual battle in reality? I mean if there was any kind of track record to this sort of thing in reality, ok, but as far as I know there isn't.
That said the states has advantages. As someone mentioned, it's a newer machine, in the world of technology, newer is better. The old one doesn't have experience points or some @#%%...Heck, whoever pilots/controls them wont even have any experience at all regardless unless there has been something like this in the past.
But not only that, but the states made theirs, and 'challenged' Japan right away...Chances are they built theirs FOR an actual mech battle, not some live-action prop... Japan's, being aged, is likely built to be a live action prop more than an actual fighting machine...Those are real advantages over experience making fiction.
Now if there are other factors related to reality I'm not aware of, then maybe I'll take back what I said, but nobody has seemed to indicate such thus far.
