With the recent announcement of Dynasty Warriors 9 (Shin Sangoku Musou 8) I figure now is a decent time to create a topic dedicated to one of KoeiTecmos main franchises, while talking about its latest installment. Crossposting information taken from the Koei Warriors Forums with permission from the original poster. Dynasty Warriors 9 is said to be the 'rebirth' of the Warriors franchise. It is going to be the games first open world title, allowing players free reign to wander and explore any part of china they want. Gameplay Features- Open World - Overall
The reason why the team decides to make DW9 as Open World is they're taking challenges to make new things because as of the last numbered title (DW8), the series is coming to a stale.
DW9's Open World system takes some references from Toukiden 2, but it won't be the exact same because the nature of Open World in each games are different.
They plan to reproduce the whole lands of China, but with a focus on livable territories, and a further focus on places where major battles took place like Hulao Gate or Zhongyuan (Central Plains, Guandu etc)
Time & Weather will be changing in real time. In nighttime and/or rain it will be harder for enemies to notice the player.
- Open World - Cities
There will be over 10 major unique cities along with more generic towns & villages in the world map.
The major unique cities such as Luoyang won't be as big as they were actually, but each area will be about 1 kilometer(square?) big so they should still feel large.
Player can move into cities in the middle of battles.
Player should be also able to do purchases inside cities.
- Open World - Transportation
The main method for land transportation is by riding a horse, but a Fast Travel feature is also planned to be added.
Swimming is confirmed returning from DW6. Player can also cross large rivers like Changjiang and Yellow River, although it may take about 5 minutes by swimming.
Boats are also available as a faster transportation method to cross rivers.
| - Story Progression
Story mode is back to character-based (like pre-DW7), but the history progression is basically the same for each character (like pre-DW6).
There will be no What-If/Hypothetical branches that alter history here.
Story progression is based on eras (Yellow Turban Rebellion, Anti-Dong Zhuo Coalition, and so on).
The starting era will depend on the selected character. For example if you choose Wang Yuanji she will start in an era later than what Zhao Yun would start at.
Due to the different starting era, switching player character in mid-game is currently unconfirmed because they would have to re-introduce the era again if the new character's starting era is different from the current era.
Discussions in the world map will be pertaining to that era. For example if you go to Nanman during Yellow Turban Rebellion era, you will hear Nanman people talking about Zhang Jiao.
| - Battles & Missions
Each era has a main mission that must be cleared to advance the era. (eg. Defeat Zhang Jiao in YTR era to advance to Dong Zhuo era)
The main mission starts with having a high difficulty, but it can be lowered by clearing other missions related to the main mission beforehand.
Multiple battles may occur at the same time in different places, and the player will have to make a choice on which battle they want to participate in. They are no longer split by stages.
Player can capture castles in various ways other than the orthodox-from-castle-gate method. For example they can raid the castle from a higher elevation (eg. mountains), or do a stealth infiltration to hit the main target without getting noticed by other enemies.
There are also subquests such as hunting wild animals with archery and battling against foreign tribes (eg. Shanyue) that have unique visuals.
| - State Combo
In the first interview, the team indicated that they are planning to revise the moveset system from what has been commonly known as Square for normal attacks and Triangle for charge attacks. State Combo is the new moveset system that will change moves depending on the surrounding enemy situations.
State Combo is comprised of the following 3 attacks: -Trigger attack: Begins the combo -Flow attack: Combo that changes based on enemy situations -Finish attack: Powerful attack that ends the combo An example of how State Combo works is that when enemies are mid-air then the player character will jump towards them.
| - Interactive Action
Actions will change depending on the surrounding terrains and objects.
For example, player will be able to use field objects to attack, such as catapults.
Player can also use a grapple hook to climb castle walls and high mountains.
Player can utilize oil cans in field to cause fires.
- Other Action Revisions & Additions
The team has indicated that they want to keep some other systems like Musou attack to retain the exhilarating feel of one-vs-thousand (Note: In DW8, all characters have 1st Musou, 2nd Musou, Aerial Musou and Awakening Musou)
Archery FPS mode from DW5 & before is returning & usable for all characters. It also lets the player to snipe enemies from afar.
| - Miscellaneous
On 31 March 2017, Producer Suzuki held a poll on Twitter asking if the fans prefer Liu Bei with mustache or not. The poll ended with the mustache winning 67% of the votes.
Producer Suzuki also said to use the poll comments as reference, in which many are suggesting both versions of Liu Bei (young without mustache & older with mustache) to appear in DW9, just like in SW: Spirit of Sanada.
Character models are being reworked from scratch to fit PS4-grade graphics.
Characters' new costumes in DW9 will have a tendency of getting less flashier and more geared towards realistic based on the costumes in Three Kingdoms era.
| Characters: All Characters from Dynasty Warriors 8: Empires will be returning for this title, along with various new characters for this new installment. Characters are classified by the Kingdom they serve, alongside the 'others' who are characters who don't serve a specific kingdom, but are still playable. Wei Kingdom | Wu Kingdom | Shu Kingdom | Jin Kingdom | Others | |
| |
|
|
The following are the Brand New characters introduced for this title: - Zhou Cang
Shu Kingdom A fictional character who used to serve Zhang Bao in Yellow Turbans, then later served under Guan Yu. Immortalized in real-life statues that depict himself with Guan Yu & Guan Ping as a trio. Weapon: Butcher Sword JP VA: Chiharu Sawashiro EN VA: TBA
- Cheng Pu
Wu Kingdom Veteran Wu general who had served three generations of Sun Jian, Sun Ce & Sun Quan. Respected by other officers for not only seniority but also his wise leadership. Weapon: Double Pike JP VA: Atsuki Tani EN VA: TBA
- Man Chong
Wei Kingdom An old friend of Xu Huang, and a scholar who served Cao Cao. He advised Cao Ren in the battle of Fan Castle, and was most famous for repelling Wu army at the New Hefei Castle. Weapon: Shooting Spears JP VA: Takashi Aoki EN VA: TBA

I would be excited if this was going to have a Switch release. Seems it won't, so I'm not.
Shame, really. The game looks kindda great.

Thanks Ixbran, great coverage as always! Info very neatly set as well! Keep up the good work! Thank you very much, like I'm super excited for this game. Like, I love Warriors games so much, there so therapeutic and calming for me. Like nothing helps me de-stress after a bad day than coming home, popping in a Warriors game, setting the difficulty to easy and then just mowing down the many enemies in front of me. seriously the rage i may have had pror, or even the depression i may have had before, instantly gone. It's one of the reasons why I never undrerstood why the series gets so much hate from so many people, both gamers and game reviewers. Its one of the reasons I'm posting this info about DW9 here, im hoping to catch peoples attention with it and maybe they might consider getting it. I really want this franchise to be appreciated by more people ya know? Like normally I'm not a fan of open world games, most of the time the ones i've seen are all post-apocalyptic, which I dont find appealing at all. I'm not a fan of games whos color pallet consists of browns, greys, and other grungy colors. Breath of The wild was the first open world game I ever played as well as genuinely enjoyed, so the fact that DW9 is going to be open world as well? after playing BotW I cant help but be estatic for this game. And OH MY GOD is this game so fucking pretty! This game looks so (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ✨🌟💖 PRETTY I would be excited if this was going to have a Switch release. Seems it won't, so I'm not. Shame, really. The game looks kindda great. Though I do agree with you, a Switch version WOULD be amazing. I finally have a reason to finally get a PS4. I was going to get one for KHIII, but I kept putting it off since there aren't any PS4 games out 'now' I want sans Warriors All-stars, and even then I want games more than that. But yeah this makes me want a PS4 soooo much <3

The word you're looking for is "cathartic".
And yes, this game is totally gorgeous. I never doubted KoeiTecmo on this. Given my long history of videogaming, I still wonder how they manage to surpass themselves to create such detailed worlds full of life.

That is right along with the possibility to incarnate a vast cast of legendary names of Chinese history (with semi-godly powers), males and females alike. You don't see that often in videogames.
Oh and got to praise the millions of mooks that will fight to the death as well.

Also, now that I think about it, isn't the Switch going to get a Nobunaga's Ambition in Japan? (That makes me a tad ANGRIER because I do like the series but I'm well aware there's zero chance that gets a western release)
That might explain why Dynasty Warrios is coming for the PS4.

I dunno about using Dynasty Warriors to deal with anger or stress issues. Relieving such emotional problems by killing hundreds of fictional people doesn't seem all that psychologically healthy to me.
Regardless, I myself am excited for DW9. I have the digital version of DW8:CLXE on my PS4, and I've played it to death. To the point that it's hard to find the drive to play it anymore, I've just done every battle in the game so many times. I eagerly await the reveal of my 'big three' Warriors, Cao Cao, Sima Yi, and Yuan Shao. Other favorites of mine include Lu Lingqi, Zhang Liao, Sima Zhao, and Cao Pi.
Also really hope that Bian Shi becomes a new Wei character.

the way I see it I'd rather someone play a video game to vent frustration and release anger is far healthier a release than actually hurting people. For me video games are fun, as well as a means of venting my anger in a way thats not violent to the people around me. Some people read to de-stress, some people draw, others take up sports, I play video games. But yeah I own DW8 on PS3, the digital version, as well as a physical copy of DW8XL, and I recently got DW8E. I've been a huge fan of the series since DW3. As for returning charactwers I cant wait to see, I personally can not wait to see what they did with Liu Shan, Zhang He, Daqiao, Zhang Chunhua, and Meng Huo. In terms of newcomers, I wanna see Cao Zhi. The youngest brother of Cao Pi, the two of them, and their father Cao Cao, were known as The Three Cao's. Hes also known for being one of chinas greatest poets. I hope they draw upon his Dynasty Warriors Blast design if they decide to include him. I think it would be cool if they gave him Cai Wenji's old Erhu moveset, from DW: Strikeforce 2 ( x, x). I've always been a huge fan of the artistic styled characters, so adding another music based fighter is something I'd love to see. Not to mention the Erhu would fit his status as one of China's greatest poets, the second best poet in the countries entire history. As someone who knows little about figures from chinas history or mythology, I'm usually happy with whom ever they chose for the DW games. But if I had to add anyone specifically, it'd be Cao Zhi. Aside from him, I'd maybe want Huaman, the daughter of Meng Huo and Zhurong, to be included. Of all the people in the DW series, I've always been fond of the tribal aspect of the Nanman Clan. Meng Huo is a cuddly giant teddy bear, and Zhurong is a fierce, yet loving amazonian warrior. I love how the DW series has them be fierce almost barbaric fighters, yet still constantly doting on one another. Constantly referring to one another as 'My Dear' and 'Beloved', not to mention the fact the whole clans aspect of their allies and friends being referred too as Family. Yeah the second you become allies with the Nanman clan you isntantly become family to them, and I'd love to see that family dynamic expanded by including the daughter of said clans' leaders.

Warriors Orochi (Musou Orochi) is better. It is a crossover between Samurai Warrior and Dynasty Warrior series, merging heroes and legendary places/battles from both universes, plus adding the occasional mythological figure!
A bit old, but Musou Orochi Z is the real deal! Although, it is fully in Japanese. This and Castlevania Symphony of the Night for Sega Saturn, are the only fully-Japanese games that i ever beat through and through, all the way from start to finish... Unlocking everything, too!

I feel like I should be worried about 'strategist bloat' with the Wei kingdom at this point. They now have Jia Xu, Guo Jia, Xun Yu, and now Man Chong. That's 4 strategists. Maybe even 5 if you count Sima Yi, though he's technically a Jin character these days.
But then again, in DW8 Koei did a good job at letting the various strategists of Wei share screentime and make strategies alongside each other. Perhaps my concern shall prove to be groundless.
Regardless, really liking Man Chong's design (seems to be drawing quite a bit from his Blast design), as well as Sun Shangxiang. Lu Xun... eh, never liked him, but his design seems fairly good. Looking at his 9 design in relation to Guan Yu and Xiahou Dun's designs, and I see a clear attempt to callback to the character designs of older DW games.
Can't comment on Lu Bu, because I feel that the cellphone picture isn't giving us a good look at him in particular. I'll wait for a full scan before I talk about him at length.

Two of my 'big three' of DW have been revealed. Namely, Cao Cao and Yuan Shao. (the third, Sima Yi, looks like he'll have to wait a bit.)
Anyway, in the designs of returning veterans, you can see a clear theme of 'marry the DW8 design with older designs'. Liu Bei is by far the most notable with this, returning to a more DW2-5 visual design, though with some respects to his DW8 look, such as in his facial structure. I'll also note that this is really the first time I would ever dare to use the word 'badass' to describe Liu Bei.
The emphasize on merging modern designs with classic designs is good for Diaochan, because she'd have been straight up naked is they continued the route they were going. DW8 pretty much had her in underwear and a waistcloth. Though with Diaochan specifically, I'll mention that while I do acknowledge that since she was part of a plot to have both Dong Zhuo and Lu Bu to lust after her and thus there was an in-story justification for her outfits in recent installments, I still favor a more 'conservative beauty' for her, as she had prior to DW6. I'm a straight guy and all, but I honestly find massively sexually promiscuous designs to be a bit of a turnoff.
Though the emphasize on merging the older and newer designs makes me wonder how more recent DW characters, like Wen Yang or Bao Sanniang, are going to look.
Last design note from me, Yuan Shao's cape. I never liked the shape it had in DW8, and I like that it's returning to a more 'traditional' design as far as capes go.
Also, looking at the renders, everyone is still using their current weapon as of DW8E. (Sun Quan's sword isn't on fire, but that's still clearly his Flame Blade.) That actually irks me a little with Yuan Shao, because while a favorite character of mine, I've never liked the moveset of the Extension Blade.

Here are some gameplay videos for you from the event:
