Basically what the title says, what do you define as a "Metroidvania" games and what makes it different compared to other genres for you? I define Metroidvanias as games where you explore a large interconnected area, find new abilities to uncover new areas. I count games from Metroid and Castlevania up to games like Hexen,Hexen 2 and Powerslave (Exhumed in Europe) as Metroidvanias. But what about you?

I believe I would define metroidvania as a 2D or 2.5D sidescroller with a large map, backtracking, bosses, weapon upgrades, treasures, hidden passages ect. Hollow Knight which was linked in another thread is a good example in my personal opinion.

metroid + rpg elements + bosses, they are generally 2d action games, though attempts at 3d and even top down exist.
