I'm surprised there has been no discussion of this game in my absence (or maybe I just can't find the thread?). Hollow Knight is a brand new Metroidvania game that came out last week for $15 on Linux & Windows (you can buy it on Steam). A Mac and a Switch version are coming out sometime later this year. You play as the main character, Hollow Knight, who is some sort of bug creature and explore a world most inhabited by more bug people. I haven't gotten a chance to play the game myself but I've seen mostly rave reviews and just from watching videos and gameplay the game as a whole looks fantastic. It's a game with even more unique enemies than SOTN and I've heard the NPCs are a very cool bunch too. Playthroughs are pretty easy to find online but that is obvious spoiler territory so I've just posted the release trailer below. This seems like a game most people around here would love so I suggest y'all check it out! Be sure to post your impressions if you do!

I backed this one on Kickstarter and have been looking forward to it for some time. Sadly, I've been so swamped at work, I haven't had time to play it yet!!
Night in the Woods also came out recently, and I haven't had time to play that one either. *sigh*

Bought it on last Saturday, played 2hrs straight into the game.
First, this game looks gorgeous. Dialogue has its own feeling too.
Second it plays very solid, much like a IGAvania title, though with it's own twist like weapons have some kind of backlash when you attack. It even has an enemy encyclopedia, pretty cool.
Music is good also, new-age / ambient tracks with beautiful melodies.
I'm still early into this game, and I'd love to dig deeper.

How hard is the game? If compared o other games? I get tired so fast if I am stuck or find it too hard. (I feel my time could be put on more important things than gaming when I get stuck over and over again).
Let me know.

They announced in January a Switch version was in development I will probably download it when it comes out. I am more comfortable gaming on my TV than on my PC personally.

How hard is the game? If compared o other games? I get tired so fast if I am stuck or find it too hard. (I feel my time could be put on more important things than gaming when I get stuck over and over again). Let me know. Let me put this way, it's difficult but it's fair (not as difficult as OoE but definitely harder than SoTN, if you want some comparison). You'll die a lot in this game and it has a Dark Soul-like mechanism (you lost all your money if you die, and you must travel back to where you died to recover). IMO I'd be happy if Bloodstained's difficulty is similar to Hollow Knight. What's bothering me is, this game has a huge map, and map of an new area is only available when you found a certain character and buy the map from it. But often when you finally found this character you're probably half-way or even completed the area! That means you need to complete at least a good chunk of new area WITHOUT a map to get a proper map. Even worse, the character changes its position. Let's say you've found the character but can't buy the map because you don't have enough money, and you might want to grind some money in the next room, but when you come back, the character is gone. I've been through this situation and it's very, very frustrating, but at least you could buy that map after defeating that area's boss. This really makes backtracking A LOT harder and time-consuming, but hey, the original Metroid on NES doesn't have a map feature at all.

Okay, after 20hrs-ish into this game, I'd say I really, really loved it so far. Maybe the same level that I love SoTN. That map problem sure is somewhat painful, but solvable, if you can't find the map dealer in an area just beat the boss, return to the town and buy that map. Also if you've already found him, he shows up every time until you beat that area's boss. This makes the situation a lot more better than before. He even left his trace behind!
With that resolved, now I can adore this game wholeheartly. The whole bizarre and beautiful world, the poetic yet mysterious narrative, gorgeous design, tons upon tons of secrets... very easy to lost yourself in. Control is tight, battle and platforming is challenging but fair. There are some rage quits while playing, but it's mostly because I'm mad at myself that I'm not good enough. Everything about this game feels just right. Top-notch metroidvania, definitely would to play it again after finish my first run.
Can't wait to see speedrun for this.

silentsanctum they have announced a 2017 window, so it should be soon. they probably don't wanna announce anything during all the Odyssey hype, in fact with Skyrim/Doom/LA Noire followed by Xenoblade December 1st my guess is mid December as that's when their going to have the best chance to sell well. personally I've been interested in the game for awhile and it sounds like a perfect fit for the Switch, but looking at steam its about 9GB which would destroy most my internal storage and would rather not buy a Micro SD card for it, so really depends on if they're doing a physical release or not

An update has emerged from the darkness! Hollow Knight blogLooks like we will have to wait a little longer for the Switch port, on the other hand, that just means more time to get H Y P E. But I am a bit concerned about it launching closer to the release of Bloodstained, hopefully it doesn't affect sales at all!

I really like the visuals of this game, I honestly look forward to games like this on the Nintendo Switch more than anything major they actually have (basically, most big budget titles). Hollow Knight, Bloodstained, Binding of Isaac, Shovel Knight: Specter of Torment, Cave Story, Kamiko, Shantae and most of these indie games were more exciting for me than any of the titles the media and general public were hyping up a lot. Bloodstained and Rockman 11 are the only big budget titles I'm really excited about, I love metroidvanias and 2D platformers, and the reason I like these indies so much is that most of them are metroidvanias, or have elements from these genres, and are also very charming in style, many of them being 2D games, which I really like.
For whatever the reason, big budget companies don't make games like this very often, I will sure give them a try when I eventually buy a Nintendo Switch (I know that a lot of the new games are being well regarded), but only after I buy my indie darlings, 2D fighting games, arcade titles and the like.
Though that most likely won't happen until next year or later.

Nice game. I actually have it in my GOG wishlist. One of the better metroidvanias around.

For whatever the reason, big budget companies don't make games like this very often Back during the PS2 generation, people would often say 2D was dead, and that you'd never see any of these types of games on a home console again. I'm just glad they were wrong, regardless of who is making the games.

If there is anything that makes Hollow Knight great, it's taking away the power fantasy. We should get a balanced weak mode.
