it was quite fun reading all the salty comments from all the Wii U hopefuls... and in contrast, how mature we, the Bloodstained community, are handling this potential change from Wii U to the NS Don't be too proud. There are people just like that in the Bloodstained comments section, including some that have gotten it into their heads that it would somehow be feasible for a backer only Wii U port to be made. fair point

Backer-only physical print edition just for them, even. Still, in the end, I want what makes the people happy. Potential gross dissatisfaction has a price attached to it.

purifyweirdshard I'd be moderately surprised if there are even a gross of people that would be genuinely set back by switching to the Switch.

lol yeah, you didn't see my post before I edited it...
BUT, we are in kind of a tricky spot here with how crowd-driven things are. The feelings of a few can fuel the clickbait article that hurts (upsets) the many. It's very, very easy to be misinformed about things that so few people (i.e. us) know the actual truth about.

Anyone here still thinking Bloodstained will launch on WiiU more than a year after the Switch comes out? Really?
I honestly did think Yooka-Laylee would come to WiiU since its release was so close. I never thought we would get news about its WiiU version cancellation 4 months before launch date. But this news pretty much seals the deal.
At this point I don't think leaving it to a backer poll should be up for discussion. If canceling Bloodstained for WiiU in favor of a Switch version helps Iga having a better chance of making the game a success (hint: it is!) then he should do it. Its for his sake and the future of the franchise's sake.
My guess is they're waiting to at least after the WiiU proper reveal in Jan 12 when we know more about the console and people get excited about it. Once we know that they'll announce the WiiU version being dropped as it should be.

having yookalaylee on the switch will help them get to more people at this point, and while im a bit bummed that the wiiu is losing another game, being able to play a collectathon on the go is a huge plus, same with being able to play mario and zelda and possibly metroid, and an igavania on the go or bring it up to work to play on break is a huge plus

I learned today that my brother is pretty annoyed/upset about the possible lack of a Wii U version. He has a Wii U, but that's it. No PS4, no X1, no PC capable of running it. He didn't back the game, but is a pretty big fan of the CV series and has been lightly following Bloodstained (mostly through conversations with me). He does not have his Wii U connected to the internet. He has a slow DSL connection and doesn't want to try hooking it up to the Wii U. He was planning on picking up a physical Wii U copy of Bloodstained, but if there is no Wii U version, he will probably pass on Bloodstained altogether. He also doesn't plan on getting a Switch.
(It's pretty sad really. He was the one who first showed me Symphony of the Night (which happens to be his favorite game of all time).)
I'm sure there are other people out there in similar situations.
TL;DR: My brother is a physical-media-only Wii U owner with no other way to play Bloodstained who will simply pass on BS: RotN if there is no Wii U version. Sad face.

I can sympathize, but people in that situation are by far the minority. No decisions have been made yet. He's not a backer though, and if the point is that the decision would affect Wii U sales vs Switch sales, there's no comparison. The sales would be much higher on Switch. The needs of the many outweigh the few.

EDIT: Since my brother didn't back the project, he isn't losing anything if there ends up being no Wii U version. Wii U backers who get a refund also don't lose anything. It's IGA who will lose the respect of said minority by not having a Wii U version. I'm not trying to argue there should be a Wii U version. I just want people on the forums to remember that there is a minority of people who will be upset if the Wii U version doesn't happen. People who aren't backers, part of the BS community, or following Bloodstained's development will only see it as IGA saying one thing and doing another. It's a difficult situation to rise above. I hope it doesn't have significant fallout for IGA.

I don't think it will in the long or even medium run. Especially if IGA waits until either the Switch is out and we can see how initial sales are going or at least until we move from the realm of rumor to hard fact in terms of the Switch's capabilities, cost, etc. I strongly suspect that we are going to be seeing more and more projects announce dropping the Wii U in favor of the Switch in the coming months, and depending on the timing, an announcement that Bloodstained is doing the same could be viewed as simply expected and natural in light of a similar trend in other developers.

The Yooka-Laylee news stings, honestly. I understand it to an extent, but that still doesn't mean it isn't disappointing. This is the opposite situation as Bloodstained. Yooka-Laylee was developed for PC and Wii U internally, and was then ported to PS4 and XBox One by an external team; moreover, the Wii U version had a lot of backers. (http://www.nintendolife.com/news/2016/06/playtonic_handling_wii_u_version_of_yooka-laylee_team17_porting_to_ps4_and_xbox_one)
The communications leading up to this didn't seem to suggest a cancellation was coming. I feared it might happen half-jokingly after the Bloodstained talks about moving to Switch, but the reassurances that came several months ago seemed to suggest otherwise. Now, I understood the idea that it could be a business decision, like Bloodstained probably will end up being, but this was actually said to not be a business decision but a matter of technical issues. That being said, this game was going to be launched within such a time period that it could have been on Wii U (far more than Bloodstained, at least). Even with the Switch coming now, I would assume significant development time and resources have already been spent on the Wii U version. I would imagine that the Switch development will incur new costs if it comes to pass (it's being explored). Given that reports say the previous build was having trouble running smoothly on PS4 at points, though, and we don't know what Switch will be in terms of power, there are no guarantees. (http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2016/12/yooka-laylee-first-impressions-a-rush-job-but-polished-in-the-right-places/) Still, those extra expenses to potentially get it on Switch might pay off since they could theoretically be launching the game sometime during the Switch's launch window.
I'm glad Nintendo is keeping Zelda: Breath of the Wild going on Wii U still. I know it will probably have some frame rate hiccups compared to the Switch version, but as an old-school gamer, I like it when the life and value of a console are extended with new experiences. (I played Twilight Princess on the Gamecube, not the Wii, and any losses were negligible in the long run.) As things are turning out, I'm not sure when I'll be able to play Yooka-Laylee or Bloodstained, both of which I backed and greatly anticipated. But such is life, and I don't want to damage any game development processes. Please understand, I don't want or need to blame anyone, but I can't exactly jump for joy that I won't be able to experience the game as I backed it. And I don't think that's completely unreasonable. I mean, theoretically, imagine for a second that Bloodstained was pushed to PS5 (rumored to be launched between 2018 and 2020) and/or XBox Scorpio (2017?)--not saying that would ever happen, but just imagine it for a second; you probably wouldn't be "100% OK with it," I'd assume.

RichterB Yours is a refreshing perspective, nonetheless. At least you make the effort to understand, compared to the truly malcontent ( not saying that you are "malcontent" as well). I can only say these two things regarding Bloodstained at this point: 1. Full development of Bloodstained only just began back in July of this year (as mentioned in a previous Kickstarter Update). I think that may influence the decision of whether to drop the Wii U version in favor of the Switch. 2. The Switch's worldwide distribution is planned to begin in March 2017, and Bloodstained is now projected to be released sometime in 2018. This will certainly give IGA & co. plenty of time to decide whether or not they will keep the development of the Wii U version going. ^ As I mentioned to someone else in the Comments of Bloodstained's Kickstarter page, the Switch is surely going to be a relatively-cheaper purchase around the time that Bloodstained is released. No-one planning to get the game for the Switch is really obligated to buy the console before that time-frame.

No-one planning to get the game for the Switch is really obligated to buy the console before that time-frame. Good points. If Switch ports are indeed offered for these two games, I will give them serious consideration since I've already made the investment in backing them--assuming there are no extra fees because these versions go beyond the scope of the original Kickstarter. But I just know that, sadly, they'll likely sit in the corner until such a time that the Switch becomes a must-have through a significant amount of software, and that has to include a big Metroid release for me to finally bite, I think. Hardware investment for me is totally tied to software, not power or promises. (In an ideal, alternate-reality world, I would have personally loved them on Wii U, even if they weren't the most popular versions.) As for Yooka-Laylee, the work on it for Wii U must have begun a long time ago compared to Bloodstained, so to think it doesn't work on the console just a few months from launch is a little confusing. But I suppose these things happen. If it's technical, I guess what must have happened is they worked solely on the PC version with faith that it would port to Wii U? They chose to handle it themselves rather than use an external team like they did for the PS4 and XBox One versions, so they must have had some level of confidence...or maybe that was concern? Anyways, I have to say I feel a little more removed from these projects and their updates now that I assume they both won't be for Wii U, but I still wish them well. They're games the industry really needs right now, in my estimation.

The cancellation of Yooka-Laylee Wii U version was a surprise to me, I expected to game to have been almost finished by now. I hoped they will make a Switch port at a later time (even though they said they will not do it). In the end, I am really happy for the Switch version because this game belongs on Nintendo and now it will be a high quality portable version of the game. This is the same thing I want for Bloodstained, so the Switch version has so much more potential. I don`t think that cancellation of Bloodstained Wii U version and switching (haha) to Switch will be a surprise, and the majority of people will understand it as a logical step and welcome this upgrade. At the time we didn`t know what Switch will be, I was routing for the Wii U version and was upset by the thought of its cancellation. Now I see it as an amazing opportunity for a better and more successful version of the game. I don`t think anyone will loose respect for IGA, it is a logical step and a good business decision. Here is a link to an article on NintendoLife about the observations on Wii U and Switch situation: www.nintendolife.com/news/2016/12/editorial_as_games_jump_to_nintendo_switch_we_see_how_quickly_the_industry_moves_on

I might consider to change my PS Vita pledge to an NX one ("Switch"!!? What the f**k Nintendo!?), if that option becomes reality. Hmm... or maybe keep the Vita pledge and throw some more money at an NS version of the game. Memory card, anyone? The sweet pounding echo of cartridge nostalgia?! Oh, yes Sir! Anyhow, I really hope that Bloodstained will get a physical NX release... even if we won't see a Kickstarter version of it. I hope that the Wii U idealists realize that the switch to Switch is the most reasonable approach, I think... if technically possible and profitable for IGA & friends, that is.

If it's technical, I guess what must have happened is they worked solely on the PC version with faith that it would port to Wii U? Most devs work on a base version which they then port across platforms and optimize. However, if there is a need to create specific adjustments and tools in order to pull a port off, they will start with those preparations earlier. You can see this in BS's development, as Armature was hired to make specific version ports possible.

also with armature we dont actually know which came first, armature working on a wiiu/vita plugin for ue4 and bloodstained was a good game to partner with to debut it, or the team wanting a ue4 plugin for wiiu/vita and armature stepped up and said we can do that, end result is the same however, either there will or wont be bloodstained on the wiiu and if there isnt it will certainly be on the switch
regardless, what nya says is true, you make a master copy of the game first for x platform (usually pc unless youre building a console exclusive that later has a pc port), and then your engine has plugins that tailor that master copy to run on each platform, and then a good dev (or at least one not on a crazy holiday release deadline) goes through and optimizes each build to run better and take care of any bugs or errors that occur in translation, before this was a much bigger undertaking due to heavily customized engines or straight up custom engines like FOX or the one FF15 uses, but with engines like ue4 and unity getting more robust and having more tools added to their kit porting will slowly become much less of a hassle
