Ok we all know Castlevania Symphony of the Night is freakin' awesome... or at lest most of us know. What I really want to know is how many of us played the game before Bloodstained and how many of us played the game after... or didn't even know that it existed until the kickstarter.
Also what was your favorite part? what was your least favorite part? or what was your favorite weapon? etc...
WARNING: This thread is not made to make those that came in late or have never played the game, feel bad... instead it is to encourage them to play or to reminisce about our first time with the game.
So in short this is for nostalgia or new feels...
Now for me... I knew it came out in high-school, but I was not able to buy the game until I got a job... (my parents though video games were evil and refused to buy me games). When I was finally able to play it, I started it up and it was awesome!!! XD After I began to control Alucard I played with the buttons and I did that Alucard sword shadow move... It was so awesome!!! Than I tried different moves and I did dark metamorphosis by accident... I glowed red and looked so cool XD... the button combos were the greatest part for me... and every time I got a new sword I tried a button combo move...I was so excited when something actually happened!! it was soooooo COOOL!!!!!!!!!!!!
(I would like to apologize... I know there are way too many "so cool"s and "awesome"s)

While not one of my favorites and DEFNITELY overhyped, IGA considers Symphony of the Night to be his best work, and it is a very good title. Not that it beats Aria or Dawn, for me. :p JeffCross , you really are just a grown up child, aren't you, ahahaha :] One thing that I really enjoyed about SotN was the Familiar system. They weren't just a spell that you cast, each one did different things, and had different personalities. I personally enjoyed the company of the Devil Familiar the most. Another piece that I really enjoyed was the mobility. It felt really fluid moving Alucard around, and I'm GLAD that a lot of the mobility power-ups didn't come until later in the game. Mobility plays a HUGE part in how much you can accomplish without X items. Some other things I liked included: - Lots of weapons, primarily swords,
- Lots of interesting and tactic necessary bosses,
- Brilliant artwork and animation.
Truly, a well created game. :)

Truly, a well created game. Yeah a bunch of friends I know that played the GBA/DS versions liked those better than SotN at first I though they were crazy but I get it, it's like listing to a remake then people tell you that there was an original then you listen to it and it just not as great as the new one... to you at least... so I get it. And who are you calling a grown up child! how dare you... now where is my blanky... blanky... BLANKY!!!!! (imagine me on my knees, fists in the air acting way over dramatic)... lol naw I just likes what I likes. I missed out on stuff while growing up so I try to make up for it now that I am and adult... technically...

I didn't get around to SOTN until after I'd played all the GBA, DS and PS2 games. I didnt want to risk buying a used copy of the PS1 original on Amazon, and at the time I did not have an XBL account (I don't think it was on XBL at the time even if I did have one). I didn't get to play SOTN until I got a PSP, which meant I got to enjoy Maria I think its a fantastic game. Wonderful art, stellar music, crisp animations, just a wonderful game. Its aged fantastically (granted almost all of IGA's games have, a real testament to the man's skill). Granted I think the fanbase is a bit zealous in defending it from any and all criticism. There are some real anachronistic issues at times. Was I really expected to bait a gorilla into following me to a different screen and throw his barrel at the floor to blow it up? Enemies don't follow you between rooms in any of the other games, there's nothing that would lead the player to come to that solution. Things like that just make the progression feel a little clunkier than in some of his later games. That being said, I will agree SOTN is absolutely one of the best 2D games ever made, even if, personally, I think Aria of Sorrow is the real pinnacle of IGA's work on the series (and since some might claim I'm just playing favorites, I can distinguish between "best" and "favorite". Order of Ecclesia is my favorite of IGA's games, though can divorce myself from my opinions to agree its probably not *as* solid in all aspects like SOTN and Aria are.) Honestly the main issue I have with SOTN are the more casual fans I get deluged by every time Castlevania comes up somewhere other than this specific forum. There's only so many times I can get beaten over the head with the game's pure amazingness and how I'm just an idiot for daring to say its not my favorite game in the series before said fans retroactively embitter me on the game itself. (This is a more roundabout way for me to say I appreciate this forum because I can talk to people about games like Portrait, Ecclesia and Harmony and actually get to talk about them without someone derailing the discussion back to SOTN every bloody time).

One of my very favorite games. The music, the atmosphere, even the script..."Farewell, land of my birth. These eyes will never again gaze upon your beauty" is a line that stuck with me for a very long time.

SOTN is definitely one of my favorite games, if not my favorite of all. I got to play the actual game on PS1 several years ago. Music would be my favorite part of it (I really enjoyed dumping the CD in a CD player and actually getting to hear a really cool track introduced by Alucard), along with the variety of weapons/fighting styles and spells. My biggest complaints about this game would be the lack of cheesiness in the English voice acting (just kidding) and more seriously the fact that they trashed a whole lot of content when porting the game from Saturn to PS1.

The game was ported the other way around, from PS1 to Saturn. That extra content was added without IGA's consent, and the game wasn't optimized with the same care to resolution and sprites as the PS1 game.
Anyway, I remember first seeing SotN in a gaming magazine...probably Electronic Gaming Monthly back when that was a thing, and the screenshot was Alucard doing Hellfire in the alchemy lab. The three fireballs were there, and me and my brother were not sure what to think...like woah, it's like playing as Dracula? You have spells? Where is the Belmont?
When I got the game...RIP whatever other game was out at the time. MGS1 was big for me around that time as well, but man...that game was life for a while. I don't even recall it that well, it was kind of blur of just being sucked into it.
I was a Castlevania fan before, especially of CV3 and Dracula X. I hadn't played Bloodlines yet, so since the SotN Prologue says "Final Stage - Bloodlines", I actually thought that was...the final stage of Bloodlines. I was somewhat disappointed when I did get to play that game, but I like it too anyway, lol. It was more...difficult to know things back then. I missed the inverted castle for a while, and the "wear...in...clock...tower" inscription on the rings didn't help. I wore them in the clock tower - nothing, lol.

I got it cause the reviews said it was good. I didn't get into it and had to force myself to play it. Then when I got to the 2nd castle I got interested again. Mostly cause it had all the classic enemies again, in interesting next gen ways. Akmodan spit out dust. Creature had a interesting redesign and did the cool sprite rotation thing. Medusa had a sword and talked. At the time I liked the 2nd castle alot more than the first. I wound up getting hooked on the game. Glad I stuck with it.

I'm glad this thread got revived.
I learned about CSOTN when a past friend of me showed me the game. Castlevania with RPG elements? A whole slew of weapons, armor, accessories? A map? I was instantly charmed by the game. The game being extremely fluid as well and being able to progress further at defined points also played their roles.
Needless to say that when I heard it also was present in the Dracula X Chronicles as unlockable made me buy the latter, fast.
I am hopeful for Bloodstained. Not worried, not desperate, I just will enjoy it fully when it gets available, or when a beta/2nd demo is out. I sadly missed the E3 one since I am just a slacker backer (I didn't wish to deal in e-commerce before).
The rest shall unfold in time. Let's see what the future got in store for us.

I was about to graduate from high school, and my older brother was in college when SotN was released. He invited me to visit him at his college one weekend and showed off SotN. I was hooked right away. I even went out some time after that weekend and bought a PlayStation with SotN and FF7.
I still sing SotN's praises to every gamer I come across as the best game of all time.
Only time will tell if Bloodstained will top SotN.

First Castlevania and my favorite to this day. The sheer amount of items and things to discover were unmatched not to mention all the subtle details put into the animations and the world itself. It also has my favorite soundtrack and castle design. I'm envious of those who get to play it for the first time.

I'll be honest, I was kinda disappointed by my first play through of SoTN. If only because i didnt know much about the series and a made a misunderstanding with it. I had read online that you could unlock Richter and Maria as playable characters, waaaayyy back when Cheat Planet was still a thing, and so I basically sped through SoTN as fast as I could to unlock Maria. Lo and behold she isnt playable, only Richter is. I was severely irritated and promptly never played the game again up until the PSP release of the Dracula X Chronicles.
Getting to replay the game with a 'fresh coat of paint' helped me to love and appreciate the game for what it was, AND the PSP version lets you play as Maria so that was definitely a plus!
