Here it is! Metroid 2 is my second favorite right after Super, and this remake is pretty damn impressive. It has optional support for some of the control options that got introduced with Fusion, the graphics and music are both great, and so far AM2R really does just feel like a professional Metroid game. If you're a fan of the series, I highly recommend it. EDIT: Looks like Nintendo decided to shut it down after the fact. Not that it matters at this point.

Yeah, Nintendo hit him with a takedown within 24 hours. Its a bummer, but, well, that's how copyright works.

yeah but if someone really wants the game, it should be out there somewhere... they might have to torrent it (though that will be technically illegal)...

I have to say that it's kind of sad that the only action Nintendo took on Metroid's 30th anniversary was a legal action.
Still, it's out in the wild now, so there's nothing they can really do about it at this point.

I nabbed it earlier this afternoon myself. I respect that they are legally obligated to fight stuff like this to protect their ownership of the IP....doesn't mean I won't download it. Game is fantastic, and its been so long since we got a Metroid game I'd forgotten just how much I missed it. Metroid has a weird history with Nintendo's other franchises. As far as The West is concerned, its part of the Holy Trinity: right there with Mario and Zelda, but the franchise never took of in Japan like it did here. I think the franchise would have been benched even further back if America wasn't so fond of it and the Prime Trilogy wasn't the critical and commercial darling it turned out to be. This might sound like bias on my part (given my obvious avatar choice), but I'd almost say Nintendo is really pushing Fire Emblem to be the third part of their "Trinity" (and given how well the 3DS games have sold, I'd say its mostly working). The franchise was always bigger in Japan but thanks to Smash Bros and a reassurance of the franchise post-DS era, its clawed its way out of the niche it sat in quite spectacularly in the West. But I digress; we will always love Metroid to pieces. Like you said: its out there now and nothing will stop fans from getting it any way they can. But, Nintendo took the action they needed to ensure they don't loose the IP. Just keep circulating the mirrors and we all win! XD. EDIT: I'm really happy I bought the Prime Trilogy on Wii when I did. Not only is it rare as all hell now, I still have that sweet poster on my wall .

I respect that they are legally obligated to fight stuff like this to protect their ownership of the IP That's the thing: they really, really aren't. People keep bringing that up in these conversations, but that only applies to trademark law, not copyright law. The Tolkien estate isn't at risk of losing the rights to Samwise Gamgee because people write homoerotic fan fiction about him. Copyrights don't weaken due to lack of enforcement. Now could Nintendo make an argument that they are protecting trademarks rather than copyrights? Sure, but they wouldn't use a DMCA takedown to do that, and there has been precedent established that trying to do so could make them liable in a countersuit(not that DoctorM64 is likely to do that). Nintendo didn't take action against AM2R because they had to, they did so because they could, and because they are out of touch with their fanbase.

Interesting side note: The sites hosting AM2R have been DMCA'd, but the creator himself has not received any communication from Nintendo or their lawninjas. So theoretically, DoctorM64 can still patch the game without actually being in violation of anything.

This may sound weird... but I think someone at nintendo might've wanted him to finish. Here is one theory: nintendo did not do anything to the creator the whole time he was creating it... and it was a big deal in the metroid community, I doubt nintendo missed this. it was on youtube and on social media. and they let the game out for two days before they shut it down... I know people are going to say "it was the weekend" but come on it was widely announced and if they really wanted it out they could have done something... so I still think that nintendo "let" this game be released. even though they stopped it after the release it is out in the internet now, and will never truly die.
but this could be some crazy theory from a crazy old dude lol

They have to know that exists but they arent stopping that either. They likely will when it launches but yeah, it will have launched and be out there.

It amuses/annoys me that quite a few people were calling for a boycott of Federation Force in response to the takedowns...and then admitted it actually wouldn't matter since they weren't planning to buy it anyway.
