Ok.... So now that I've seen the video... If I understand this correctly VNs are basically like taking a manga and doing an audio book (reading with voice actors) and slightly-ish animating the static panels from the manga and putting them together as a movie that is playable on consoles/PC. Is that even close? I mean I got the feeling that there really isn't any player participation in what's going on, your just watching a movie that's done with semi-static images rather than full on action. Or am I completely off base? Visual novels vary in terms of presentation, but in general, they fall somewhere between an RPG, an anime, and a book(sometimes of the choose-your-own-adventure style). School Days HQ, for instance, is largely animated(though it's fairly simple animation), with lots of choices that wildly change the direction of the story. Fate/Stay Night, also has a lot of choices, though they're mostly branches into various bad endings with a more limited number of actual endings. On the other hand, you have strictly linear visual novels like Umineko, and visual novels that only have a good/bad ending split for specific character routes. Like I said, it varies. As for me, yeah, pretty big fan of visual novels, though I only discovered them a couple years back. Actually just finished Tsukihime yesterday. My favorites include Steins;Gate, Muv-Luv Alternative, Grisaia no Kajitsu and Fate/Stay Night.

Also, I had pre-ordered Corpse Party: Blood Drive on Amazon. Love that series, and it's not because of the violence. It's because of the storytelling, characters, and the amazing performances that their seiyuus give.

Out of curiosity, where do you find your VNs? Maybe you could tell me in a PM or something? You can find most of them on Fuwanovel. I normally get the original non-translated VNs from NyaaTorrents, then find a group that translated it to get their patch. Mirrormoon used to be a good place for Type-Moon VN translations. It's much simpler if a VN has already been translated and released state-side, like Saya no Uta for example.

And oddly enough, I'm kinda scripting my own story within the SMT: Persona universe and writing it in the same vein as a Kinetic Novel. By that, I mean only one real choice has to be made that ends up becoming the ending fork. Of course, I mainly do this as a hobby, knowing I could never make it an actual VN since I don't have the means.

The characters are pretty much all reprehensible, but they're supposed to be. It isn't in my top 5, but it's a great VN to play every now and again without a guide just to see where it goes.

Well if we're going to judge VNs by their adaptations, there goes Tsukihime, Grisaia no Kajitsu and possibly Fate/Stay Night if you're going by the Studio Deen productions. And let's give the School Days adaptation the tiniest bit of credit: there's no way they could have made those characters likable. There's just not.

It's just that I remember how the anime adaptation of School Days ended. That being said, I do like visual novels regardless of what they are (whether they're actual VNs or adaptations of VNs), especially ones that are well-written and have a good amount of characterization. Granted, I only went through two full-fledged VNs, both being eroges. Again, those two being Katawa Shoujo and Yume Miru Kusuri.

It starts as a generic high school harem comedy, but then turns into one of the best mecha action/dramas ever. There's a reason Muv-Luv Alternative is the highest rated visual novel on VNDB(Steins;Gate is second).

Haven't seen them, so I guess I'm safe on that front lol Although I did see the anime adaptation of Steins;Gate and I thought that was well-done. Even the English voice actors for the adaptation were excellent.

Just remember to start with Muv-Luv before going to its sequel, Muv-Luv Alternative. The sequel is the highly rated one, but it doesn't have anywhere near as much impact if you haven't played the first. Also, the first one is divided into two games: Muv-Luv Extra and Muv-Luv Unlimited. You have to play through the two main heroines' routes to unlock Unlimited.

It's nice to have a (kinda sorta) debate/discussion on things that we all like. In the case of this thread, VNs. Truth be told, I haven't had a spirited debate/discussion on anything for quite a while. Helps make the time pass by in my otherwise boring life.

Other than that, it went way over my head lol Tsukihime is a good read, but it's an early work from Type-Moon, so not anywhere near as polished as Fate/Stay Night. The music is pretty minimalist, there's no voice acting... There's a remake in the works, but this is Type-Moon, so who knows when it'll actually be finished.
