Great! We only had to beg for 10 years or 15 years if you were like me and wanted a 2D game.
AM2R died for this, so I hope it was worth it. At least that may have died in vain unlike the SOR remake which was canned with NO game on the horizon.
3DS game looks alright so far. Prime 4, I'm guessing is being handled by Retro Studios?

Prime 4 is being handled by an as-of-yet unknown new studio, but at least Kensuke Tanabe is still a producer on this team.

Couple things... 1.) Since Prime 4 is not by Retro, is it possible it could be Armature Studio? They have former talent from Retro and could be construed as a new developer. Now, they gave Luigi's Mansion 2 and Federation Force to Next Level Games, which could also be a potential choice. Then again, it could be somebody completely outside the box, and that's all right. Nintendo would have to trust them pretty well to give them the keys to the car, though, is all I'm thinking. (Mercury Steam was busy with the 3DS remake, so I doubt it's them, either.) 2.) I watched the Treehouse Live with Sakamoto, and he seems fairly giddy about working with Mercury Steam on the Metroid 2 remake. He seemed to suggest by his words--something along the lines of "this opens a whole new road for Metroid"--that if this game sells well, we're going to see a future of 2.5D Metroid games from Mercury Steam and Sakamoto. (I remember how during Other M he stated something along the lines of needing a partner to advance Metroid with the current technologies/3D design techniques, and back then he settled on Team Ninja.) Interesting indeed how this could play out after all the years of Metroid being on the back burner. 3.) You know, it strikes me that people on other sites are saying the Prime and Fusion duo was the last time we had anything like this, but I just remembered that Zero Mission and Prime 2 came out in the same year, 2004, albeit some 9 months apart. But it's not like Prime 4 and the Metroid 2 remake will be coming out on the same date, so I'd say this is more like the 2004 situation. (Oh, yeah, we had Hunters announced and First Hunt released that same year, too.) 4.) Mixed feelings about those amiibo. The Metroid is really well done, but a little too weird for my taste to have sitting on a desk, I think. The pose of the Samus Aran one is classic, but looks a little awkward here. The design is a blending on the old design and the Prime design. I wanted to see a little more classic elements brought back to the design for a while, but I think they exaggerated the shoulders a bit too much (maybe it's just the angle, which is a little different than the old pose?), and the green lines are also a little heavy for me, personally. Still, glad to hear both Smash Samus amiibo will work with the new 3DS game! I may still consider these newer ones depending on how they look up close. 5.) I'm intrigued by the "3D" effects we're going to see with this game, given the console. Reports say the whole game looks better in person than in videos, but no surprise there. As an aside, I love that you can leave marker points now on the bottom screen map to return to later. And watching the Treehouse event, they've streamlined the backtracking in a perhaps long-overdue way. 6.) This new article has a lot of new info on the development of this title. Like how Mercury Steam's interest in making a Metroid played a part, that this project is not related to Metroid Dread, and how it's been in development for about 2 years. 7.) New developer diary: Just one thing, scanning didn't play a part in what ending you got. Yes, you were given a percentage, but they were for unlocking bonus content like concept pictures. What does count is the item collection rate just like every other Metroid game out there. It would be terrible if it did count towards what ending you got. Anyways, the Mario and Sonic franchise's main titles don't deviate too far from their traditional gameplay styles and still remain mostly successful, so I'm not too worried. The fact that so many people are going "Nintendo won E3" after the unveiling of Prime 4 shows that Nintendo won't be giving up on the franchise anytime soon. After the inevitable success of the Metroid 2 remake, you can bet your bottom dollar that they'll begin working on Metroid 5 or Dread. My mistake. (I'll cross that out above.) I guess I'm remembering feeling frustrated that I left something on the table with the games after playing them so carefully (the bonus stuff). It was during a replay with the Prime Trilogy, IIRC. Though, I think the first three Metroid games' endings were more about how fast you completed them than anything (even items didn't play a part in it)--not that I was a huge fan of that idea. As I noted in this post above with Sakamoto's closing comments on Treehouse Live, I now think you're right about Metroid 5 or Dread. Somewhere down the line, I'd still like the series to try one more stab at evolving its presentation--or doing a dual setup like Skyrim where you can switch between views--but for now, things should be good enough and may turn out even better.

It doesn't seem bad, at least. Could be worse, considering everything.

I very honestly hope they don't abandon 2D Metroid now. I have nothing against Metroid Prime. But I'm a fan of this type 2D exploration games, and I think it would be ideal if they kept making both. Mario still gets 2D and 3D consistently, so does Zelda.
So I personally would like it if the same happens with Metroid.

It's both nice and a bummer that Metroid is being kept alive as is. Nice that someone is interested in participating in the series. Bummer it is a 3rd party...
I relish in sprite based Metroid's. Prime's are ok, with the first being the best, personally speaking.
Side note, it's also nice the developer of Prime 4 got a good deal after breaking away from Konami.

This isn't news for MP4, but... Enjoy this blind run of Metroid Prime 2: Echoes!

What are the chances that Metroid Prime 4 will be more than just an HD clone of Metroid Prime 1-3 and Hunters? I'm imagining Sylux will be involved given hints of the past, but I really want this thing to have more 3rd-person options than just the morph ball and nerfed screw attack. After all, Metroid Prime 1 was only 1st person primarily because Retro was having trouble doing 3rd person and Miyamoto said to can it, but so many games have shown that 3rd person and 1st person can coexist...and frankly, for Metroid to evolve as a series and expand its base, it's going to need a 3rd person option at some point. It's not that I dislike Prime's interpretation of things. The first game is right up there with Super Metroid. But I think its emphasis on 1st person gameplay is holding the series back in 3D after so many iterations, especially given Samus' iconic look and agility. It's not like we limit Zelda games to 1st person. Can you imagine Breath of the Wild being 1st person except for when Link rides a horse? And I know Nintendo's scared because of what happened with Other M, but that's a terrible excuse that shows a lack of faith in the core brand and its potential. If Metroid Prime 4 is just an HD reworking of what we've seen before, I don't know that I'll be very excited at all. It'll kind of be like getting another New Super Mario Bros entry, like when we got New Super Mario Bros. U right after New Super Mario Bros. Wii.

RichterB I'll admit, I'm not really expecting any new 3rd-Person elements in Metroid Prime 4. As much as I'd like to see Samus Aran outside of a 1st-Person view in a game like this, I have the feeling that they'll stick to what worked before. Personally, I just want to see Samus acquire some totally new abilities for her Power Suit (other than just variants of classic abilities and more types of Beams). I did like that you could command her Gunship in Metroid Prime 3, so I'd like to see more situations where she could use her Gunship to progress. Heck, maybe a bonus playthrough that allows you to play as Sylux (so I can see how his "Shock Coil" works in the new game).

It's long past time Samus gets some really cool, innovative new abilities. (I guess Samus Returns tried? I still haven't gotten to play it yet; partially because the idea of remaking Metroid II so heavily seems to be a waste of time.) But back to the new abilities, besides aesthetics, that's entirely why I think the 3rd person element is needed. It opens up a lot of possibilities for new moves and weapons that might not work in 1st person. But...we'll probably just get a new Scan Visor...
