I chose random, but I would much rather vote for another option mentioned on the poll: Scream the first time any unique shard is collected on a playthrough, don't scream for subsequent shards of the same type on that same playthrough what Castledan suggested more succinctly than I did earlier in the thread.
I don't like the idea of hearing the scream every single time because it seems like one of those things that'd get old quickly, but I like the story/in-universe idea of shards being painful. I figured "first time for each shard" would be a good balance between the two and provide a subtle audio/non-verbal story element of Miriam adjusting to the pain.

I don't like the idea of hearing the scream every single time because it seems like one of those things that'd get old quickly I understand this. I would suggest them having random shard being a trigger for her scream, mostly the common / minor powered ones, perhaps the boss-battles are always triggered as a scream. Also, I would like to know if her scream have alternative sounds. When it comes to VOCAL SOUNDS, they tend to be tedeous depending on what they are saying or suggesting compare to a sound effect from weapons. I mean, nobody grows tired of gunshots (ingame) or explosions right? So, could someone, for example Mana give us some feedback on the sound effects in general about shards. Are they random? Are there different ones depending on a random faction or which shard you are getting and so on? And if there is only one sound, and it will be triggered each time, are there any suggestions about how to make it "better". Change up the painful screams, have it random and/or given the chance of mute the sound under the settings. I personally do not really care about her having the same scream, I would however feel that the "cool feel / effect" for it would fade quickly until I wouldn't register it hearing it so many times. In many AAA games, I know voice actors are recording same lines and screams, taunts and so on plenty of times with difference, ending up with a wide library of material that could be used.

OMG you guys :)The game looks fantastic and we should let the team finish the game without bothering about this kind of details. I don't mind the screams, but I am sure not everything can be to everyone's liking. For example we could have a poll about breast size of Miriam, another for breast size of Vepar, third for breast size of Bloodless etc. The development is going great and we should let the team focus on the level design, monster design i.e. the main meat of the game. I believe in IGA to handle the tweaks to the best, as he had always managed to do.

Changing the design other than the color-palette isn't anything they are looking into anymore. That chance was given a while back, when they talked about how Miriam would be represented in the game, having her in the foreground of things ingame. This subject is about sound-design, something that can be changed or even "boosted", meaning, its a new subject and it is something we like to discuss and give feedback to so that the developers can assure people liked it or not. As it stands, people like the voice effect, the sound of her in agony. The topic is more about how often she will burst out crying and screaming. If there is any clue about if she has different vocals / sayings or there are settings we haven't seen before, we are eager to find out more about it. I hope we could get a random voice fx together with random trigger when she actually screams. I small and easy *gasp one, for the most part would be nice. Not for personal thoughts, but mostly for the community feedback thus far.

Nice thread.. but I would like it if she scramed when she got a powerful shard... medium shards should be less of a scream and normal ones should be a grunt or something...

Personally, I'm fine with any of the options. Far as I'm concerned, she's shoving concentrated demonic essence into her soul; that SHOULD be painful. However, I don't really care how much or how little she actually reacts to it.

My impression is that the Shard "impalement scream" only occurs when Miriam gets a new Shard for the first time. Once she's learned the Shard's ability, the initial animation for absorbing it doesn't play anymore when getting more of the same Shard.
So it doesn't really bother me.

I voted for scream every time. The only problem is the volume. The volume of her scream should be lowered so that you can hear it, but it isn't piercing your eardrums.

The E3 demo had a whole lot of shard-screams very close together, which made a few on the forum write they didn't like the scream. Only the first shard of specific enemy makes Miriam scream as an indication of that shard/skill have been registered. This will NOT occur so frequent and the scream will as such not be so repetitive as it stands in the demo. However. It would be a very nice touch giving Miriam a few random screams. When it comes to vocal sounds, because it is a super effective soundsource (we can do so much and so advance frequency with our voice) the same scream will make less of an impact once you get used to it, perhaps even feel repetitive. This is why I have this poll. I feel its fine as is, but a bonus is always to give the players options, and a sub-conceous option is to give us different vocals and sounds, even if it's "just a scream". If there is no options on changing her voice, make it random or similar - I would still enjoy the game and have no issue with it. But the "awesome" feel will fade quick. That scream is pretty gruesome and I really like it overall.

Hey Enkeria,
I love your ideas. It's true that the demo gameplay made Miriam find a lot of shards thus making her go into quite a bout of agony. It would get pretty tiresome to hear her screaming the same way all the adventure... your idea of intensity of suffering depending on the shard's tier I fully approve of.
We know she is a cursed young lady and she reluctantly needs power since all she wants is to get rid of it for good. To seek Gebel to find a cure, to be closer to death each time, hope vs helplessness vs power in exchange of excrutiating pain...
Let's make so she does share her pain with us... but not too much. ^^

When we initially recorded, it didn't really cross my mind that we needed a scream part so when I asked, one of us said, "wouldn't it be weirder if she didn't?" so that kind of made sense to me. But probably like most people, I wouldn't have questioned it if it was left out.
This year's E3 playable had high drop rates so that the press could experience the shard system without grinding. Miriam only screams the first time the player obtains a new shard. Well, you might be hearing it roughly 100 more times or something heh. Maybe I could suggest a scream toggle, but we can't promise.

Figured the drop rate was high because of it being a demo. That's good, it'd be boring if we got everything too easily, part of the fun of my FAVORITE igavania's was being surprised when you got something because it was rare. Also, I wouldn't worry about the scream. As you said, it only happens the first time you get a new shard, when you're in an area with a lot of the same enemies that means you will only experience the sound a few times till you eventually get to the next new area. Doesn't seem like much of an issue, it WOULD have been if it happened EVERY SINGLE TIME you got a shard.
