Just wondering, what are some of the opinions of the Asian and European audience about Bloodstained's recent news. Since there is at least a forum and posters I was curious about their views on the new characters.
Well I'm European so here are my two cents. I think story-wise all three of them are sound and interesting, could make for some really cool additions to the overall storyline. Visually I think that they're a mixed bag.
I quite like the visual design of Alfred. I think his gown has a neat look to it and the grim look on his face tells us something about his personality and fate. The same goes for his tattered clothes - you can see that he's not what he used to be. The rose-pattern on the cloth hanging from his chest looks quite beautiful and goes along with the general visual theme of the game.
I also generally like Anne, nothing too spectacular here but that's okay since she'll most likely not have a huge role in the game. I think that it is pretty strange that at first it is described how her parents were murdered and she had to witness a demon attack and the next thing we're told is that she is a bright and cheerful girl... Which in turn is not reflected by her portrait at all. So that sentence felt kind of hard to believe to me so far. Maybe that'll change by her ingame representation though.
Then there's dominique whose character I generally find interesting and believable (within bloodstained's world) in terms of description - however I don't like her visual design that much since I do think that she is kind of sexualised to the point where I wouldn't want to show her concept artwork to people like say, my mother. It also clashes with her description a bit since it looks quite far removed from what I imagine a former exorcist ca. 1800 would have looked like. To me it sort of feels like pandering even if pandering was not the intention. I have no issue with sexualised designs in general - I just think that there should be a proper reason for it. For instance, if the character is a Succubus there are very good arguments for a sexualised design. In Vepars case I also liked it because of the anglerfish symbolism that went along with it. If the character has worked for the church and it's ca. 1800... Well then there's just no good reason for it. Let me say at this point that it could be far worse and that her ingame representation will be what counts so let's wait and see if that'll still be an issue then.
Basically I want things to be consistent (story and appearence) and make some kind of sense within the given context. I think that in this regard Alfreds design is the most successful with Dominique being on the opposing end.

I'm Asian and an otaku when it comes to Japanese culture. I have nothing but praise about all concept IGA has shown to us. The sexy design of Dominique is just a very Japanese thing, IMO, along with Vepar's breast. Maybe I'm just too familiar with this kind of thing lol I guess her design is not trying to precisely reflect the historical background from the beginning, it's more like that IGA had a character come to his mind, first he designed the character first, then threw some historical elements into that design.
